This second white grape of Burgundy often is overshadowed by the great Chardonnay of that region, but in the hands of Pierre-Francois Maldant, now running the show at Maison Jean-Pierre Maldant, it is a wine to be taken seriously. While Aligoté was historically appreciated for its zippy acidity, it can also show great depth of fruit, and this Maldant offers both. Ultimately, it is a delicious white Burgundy at a fraction of the cost of many of the region's great appellations.
